Materials used for making CDs and DVDs

                  The CD and DVDs are the best ways to store the datas in a digital format and carry them in to anywhere. There are many type of datas we can store in the CD and DVDs like Games, Songs, Photos, Films, Files and so on. Because the this memory devices gives lots of memory capacity in minimum cost. Normally the CDs gives a 700 MB of storage space also some CD manufacturer gives 800 MB of space. But the DVD’s offers lots of space then CDs that is the DVDs offers different storage spaces based on their layers. The normal DVDs offers only 4.7 GB of memory capacity. Today we are going to see what are the materials are used for making the CDs and DVDs.

  

Both the CDs and DVDs are made up with the five different types of materials to its five layers. Lets look those layers one by one,
1. The base layer made of a Polycarbonate Plastic. This base layer is used for two purposes

• First, it is used to protect the data layer from the damage on the play side
• Second , it act as a lens to focus the player’s laser onto the data layer.

2. A data layer is a thin layer of Aluminum coating over the polycarbonate plastic.
3. The reflective, metallic layer of clear protective Acrylic coating over the aluminum layer.
Some manufacturers uses a Silver or even Gold layer instead of the aluminum layer in              the central coating which make it reflective. And it was protected with Lacquer film. The lacquer film is usually spin coated directly on the top of the reflective layer.
4. Thin, hard protective layer is an ultra-thin Plastic coating which provides some protection to reflective layer.
5. Finally the top layer is label layer on the top of the protective layer. It contains the title, graphics and other informations about the content of the disc.
Both the CDs and DVDs are made with the same principles and also same materials. But in the DVDs one additional Polycarbonate layer is used between the label and the pits and lands.

The DVDs offers more spaces based on its layer types like as follows,

• Single layered DVDs (4.7 GB)

                          This types of DVDs are same as the CDs that is only reflective layers are used for storing the information.

• Double layered DVDs (8.5 GB)

                         This DVD’s have a Semi reflective and also a reflective layers for storing the information.

• Double sided DVDs (9.4 GB)

                          These DVDs consist of two discs bounded back to back with the reflective layers in the middle. These both sides are repairable.

• Double sided/Double layered DVDs (17.1 GB)

                         These DVDs simply made of two double layered discs are bonded back to back together.
